I agreed to carry a baby for my twin

“She is kicking up a storm,” I replied right away to reassure her. “Do not worry, everything is perfectly fine.”

Meanwhile, Lucas began checking his phone constantly during our medical appointments, tilting his screen away whenever his wife turned around.

“Is everything going okay at work?” I asked him quietly in the waiting room one afternoon.

“Yeah, work is just really busy right now,” Lucas replied quickly, shifting in his chair and changing the subject immediately.

At our final ultrasound scan before the delivery, the technician moved the plastic wand slowly across my belly while checking the baby’s growth. Suddenly, the technician stopped the instrument over the baby’s lower back for one long, silent moment.

“Is everything looking good in there?” Hannah asked from her chair, completely unaware of the pause.

“Everything looks right on schedule,” the technician answered with a quick smile, moving the wand along and wrapping up the exam.

Hannah smiled happily, but when I glanced at my brother, he was staring blankly at the dark screen as if he had seen something terrible. He did not say a single word during the entire drive back home that afternoon.

Then came the day in the labor room, where the bright lights made everything feel intensely real.

“One more big push, Nora, you are almost there,” Nurse Megan said gently while encouraging me through the intense contraction.

I gripped Nurse Megan’s hand firmly, focused all my remaining energy, and pushed with everything I had left in me. A moment later, the room echoed with the high-pitched sound of a newborn baby crying for the very first time.

“She is here, and she is so beautiful,” I whispered, completely out of breath. “Lucas, come over here and hold your daughter.”

My brother walked over slowly, moving like a man struggling to step through deep water. The nurse carefully wrapped the baby girl in a warm blanket, placed her in his arms, and stepped outside to leave us alone.

I watched my twin brother look down at his newborn daughter, expecting to see tears of joy on his face. Instead, his expression transformed into something cold and vacant, like a light suddenly going out behind his eyes.

“Lucas?” I called out, feeling a sudden chill in my chest. “What is going on? What is wrong?”

He did not answer me at all, keeping his eyes glued to the baby before carefully turning her over to inspect her spine.

“Let me hold her, honey,” Hannah said joyfully, wiping tears from her cheeks as she held out her arms. “Pass our baby girl to me.”

Instead of walking toward his wife, Lucas turned toward my hospital bed with a pale face and a tight jaw.

“I am sorry,” Lucas said in a flat, unrecognizable voice. “I cannot take her home.”

The entire room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence as his words hung in the air.

“What did you just say?” I asked, struggling to process what my brother had just uttered.

“I cannot take her home with us,” Lucas repeated, his voice devoid of any warmth.

“Lucas, what are you talking about?” Hannah asked, her smile freezing completely as confusion filled her eyes. “Give me our baby right now.”

My brother looked at his wife, then turned his gaze toward me, and said the words that shattered everything around us.

“I am sorry, but I have to give up this baby,” Lucas announced firmly. “I am not taking her with me today.”

Before anyone could react, he walked over to my bed and placed the small bundle back into my arms.

“You cannot be serious,” I stammered, holding the newborn against my chest while my hands trembled uncontrollably. “Lucas, she is your daughter, so tell us what is happening right now!”

Hannah rushed out of her seat with her hands outstretched, tears pouring down her face as panic took over.

“Why?” Hannah screamed at him, her voice cracking with sheer agony. “Lucas, why are you saying we cannot take our daughter home? Tell me right now!”

My brother refused to meet her eyes, staring down at the polished floor while his face flushed bright red.

“Look at her back,” Lucas muttered in a choked voice. “We simply cannot do this.”
