My Son’s Bus Driver Leaned Out the Window and Said Four Words Before Driving Away. Minutes Later, I Called the Police.

Part 4: Steve

Melissa stood in the doorway. She looked at Steve. Then at me.

She said, quietly, I understand if you want me to leave. I’ll go.

Steve didn’t let me answer.

He said, You lied to my wife for four months. You hid in our backyard. You made our son keep a secret.

He said, Do you know what we thought when the bus driver said that? We thought you were hurting him.

Melissa started to cry. She said, I know. I’m so sorry.

Steve turned to me.

He said, We can’t have her around Ethan anymore. We can’t trust her. Pay her for two weeks and let her go.

He said, This isn’t our problem. She’s an adult. She’ll figure it out.

Then he said the thing he’d been thinking all night.

What if something had happened to her out there? We’d have been responsible. We’d have been sued. We can’t take that risk.

I felt that one land. It was meant to.

Because he wasn’t wrong about all of it. She shouldn’t have asked Ethan to keep a secret.

I took a slow breath.

Steve, I said quietly, she made a mistake. Asking Ethan to keep a secret was wrong. She knows that.

He nodded.

But she’s been sleeping in a child’s playhouse in the cold for four months, I said. And she never once missed a day taking care of our son.

She’s trying to get her little sister out of foster care.

Steve’s jaw tightened.

I’m not firing her, I said gently. I’m going to help her.

Steve said, How?

Before I could answer, Ethan walked into the kitchen. He was carrying his piggy bank. The big one shaped like a pig wearing sunglasses.

He set it on the table in front of Melissa.

He said, This is for Lily. So she can come home.

Then he looked up at his father.

He said, Dad, you always say we help people who need help.

Part 5: The Playhouse

Steve looked at his son. Then at the piggy bank.

He didn’t say anything for a long time.

Then he sat down at the kitchen table. He put his face in his hands.

He said, quietly, You’re right, buddy. I do say that.
