My Husband Begged Me to Adopt 4-Year-Old Twin Boys So We Could Finally Be a Real Family. Then I Overheard Why He Really Wanted Them.

Eli pointed at the picture. Mommy, he said.

Sam crawled into Danielle’s lap. He said, You smell like Mommy.

Danielle held them both and cried. I cried too.

Danielle told me she applied to adopt the boys last year. She was turned down because she lived in a studio apartment and worked night shifts as a nurse.

She said, I wanted them so badly. But I also wanted them to have a real home. A yard. Two bedrooms. Someone who could be there every day.

She looked at me.

She said, I just never knew who they went to. I’ve been so scared.

The agency completed its review two months later.

Ms. Ortiz said that Joshua should have disclosed his paternity. But she said the boys had bonded with me. She said I had been honest the moment I found out. She said I was providing a safe, loving home.

The adoption stood.

Joshua legally acknowledged that he was their biological father. The court required him to complete parenting and counseling programs.

Joshua and I separated that fall. We’re divorced now. He sees the boys every other weekend and two nights a week. He’s trying. He’s a better father than he was a husband.

The boys live with me. I went back to work part-time at a smaller architecture firm. I design schools again.

Danielle comes every Sunday. She is Aunt Danny. She brings the photo album every time. The boys never get tired of it.

On the anniversary of Leah’s passing, the four of us drove to the cemetery. Danielle, Eli, Sam, and me.

The boys laid two little toy trains on their mother’s headstone.

Then Sam reached up and took my hand. He reached over and took Danielle’s hand too.

He looked up at both of us and said, I have two mommies. One in heaven, and one here.

Danielle looked at me over his head. Her eyes were wet.

I squeezed his hand.

That’s right, sweetheart, I said. And you have an Aunt Danny who loves you both.

I came into their lives because of a lie.

But I’m staying in their lives because of the truth.
