My Husband Begged Me to Adopt 4-Year-Old Twin Boys So We Could Finally Be a Real Family. Then I Overheard Why He Really Wanted Them.

She said she understood I was hurt. She said any woman would be.

Then she said, But you need to think about those boys.

She said, If this becomes a big legal matter, the agency might take them away. Is that what you want?

She said, Joshua made a mistake. One mistake. Five years ago. He’s been punishing himself ever since.

She said, Go home. Raise the boys with your husband. Don’t drag this through the courts.

Then her voice lowered.

She said, And don’t let that sister near them. She’ll only stir things up. The boys don’t need to know about their mother. You’re their mother now.

I felt that one land. It was meant to.

Because part of me wanted exactly that. To be their only mother. To pretend the rest never happened.

I took a slow breath.

Sandra, I said quietly, I am their mother now.

She nodded.

But they had a mother before me, I said. Her name was Leah. She loved them for three years. They still cry for her at night.

Sandra’s face tightened.

I’m not going to pretend she didn’t exist, I said gently. And I’m not going to keep them from the only family they have left on her side.

I’m not dragging anything through the courts. The agency is reviewing it because it’s their job. I told them the truth. That’s all.

Sandra said I was being foolish. She said I would lose everything.

Maybe, I said. But I won’t lose them by lying.

Sandra stood on the porch for a long time.

Then a car pulled into the driveway behind her.

A young woman got out. Dark hair. A tired face. She was holding a thick photo album against her chest.

She walked up the path slowly.

She stopped at the bottom of the steps and looked past both of us, through the screen door, where Eli and Sam were playing with blocks on the living room floor.

Her eyes filled with tears.

She whispered, They have her smile.

Part 5: Two Mothers
Her name was Danielle. Leah’s younger sister.

Sandra left without saying goodbye. Danielle came inside.

The boys were shy at first. Then Danielle opened the photo album on the living room floor.

Inside were pictures of a young woman with dark curls and a wide smile. Holding two babies. Pushing a double stroller. Blowing out candles on a birthday cake shaped like a train.
