I didn’t understand.
Evelyn continued.
“Daniel came from one of the wealthiest families in Massachusetts. His father owned several medical facilities and private investment companies. When he discovered Sarah was pregnant, he panicked.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel was expected to take over the family business. His father believed Sarah was trying to trap him.”
My anger began rising.
“Did Sarah ask him for money?”
“No.”
“Did she ask for anything?”
“No.”
“Then why would his father interfere?”
Evelyn’s voice became quieter.
“Because Daniel had already chosen Sarah.”
I stared at her.
“And his father didn’t approve.”
“He threatened her.”
The word hung in the room.
“Threatened her how?”
“He told her that if she stayed with Daniel, he would destroy her.”
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?”
“He threatened to have her expelled from school. He threatened to accuse her of stealing company property. He threatened to make sure she could never get a job in the medical field.”
“That sounds insane.”
“It was worse than that.”
Evelyn looked down.
“He told Sarah that Daniel would lose everything if he married her.”
I looked toward the staircase.
“Did Daniel know?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t he stand up to his father?”
“He tried.”
“And?”
“His father gave him a choice.”
“What choice?”
“Sarah or the family.”
I closed my eyes.
“And Daniel chose Sarah?”
Evelyn nodded.
“He was preparing to leave.”
My eyes opened.
“What happened?”
“His father found out Sarah was pregnant.”
“And?”
“That’s when everything changed.”
Evelyn reached into her purse one final time.
She placed another envelope on the table.
This one was old and worn.
“Sarah gave me this the night before she went into labor.”
I stared at it.
“What’s inside?”
“A letter Daniel wrote to her.”
My hands went cold.
“You have a letter from the baby’s father?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Sarah asked me to keep it.”
“Why didn’t you give it to me?”
“Because she made me promise not to.”
I stared at the envelope.
“What did she say?”
Evelyn’s eyes met mine.
“She said, ‘If my mother knows Daniel is Leo’s father, she’ll go looking for him. And if she goes looking for him, his father will find Leo.’”
My heart stopped.
“Why would his father care about Leo?”
Evelyn’s answer came almost as a whisper.
“Because Leo was the heir.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
“Daniel’s father didn’t just want Sarah gone.”
She paused.
“He wanted the baby.”
I felt a chill crawl up my spine.
“For what?”
Evelyn looked toward the staircase where my grandson slept.
“Because Daniel’s family had no other direct heir.”
Silence filled the kitchen.
I thought about Leo.
His dark hair.
His sharp green eyes.
The tiny birthmark on his left shoulder.
Things I had always considered ordinary.
Suddenly, none of them felt ordinary anymore.
“Where is Daniel now?”
Evelyn looked at me.
“I don’t know.”
“You said he believed his son died.”
“He did.”
“Then where has he been for ten years?”
“Europe, mostly.”
“Why?”
“He left the country after Sarah’s funeral.”
“Did he ever marry?”
“No.”
“Does he know I’m raising Leo?”
“No.”
I leaned back in my chair.
“Then why come here now?”
Evelyn hesitated.
That hesitation frightened me more than anything she had said.
“Because someone else found out.”
“Who?”
Evelyn looked toward the window.
A black SUV was parked across the street.
My heart began pounding.
“Evelyn?”
She stood abruptly.
“Turn off the kitchen light.”
I froze.
“Why?”
“Because that car wasn’t there when I arrived.”
I stood.
We both stared through the window.
The SUV remained motionless.
No headlights.
No driver visible.
Then my phone vibrated on the counter.
Unknown number.
I picked it up.
One message.
You should not have opened Sarah’s letter.
My blood turned cold.
A second message appeared.
Leave Daniel Whitmore alone.
Then a third.
And whatever you do, don’t tell the boy who his father is.
I looked at Evelyn.
She had gone completely pale.
“You knew this might happen.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“Then who is watching my house?”
She whispered the words I had been dreading.
“Daniel’s father.”
Upstairs, a floorboard creaked.
Leo.
Awake.
Listening.
And for the first time in ten years, I realized that keeping my grandson safe might require me to uncover the truth Sarah had died trying to hide.
I grabbed my coat.
“We’re leaving.”
Evelyn stared at me.
“Where?”
“To find Daniel.”
She looked terrified.
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
I looked toward the staircase.
“They already know about Leo.”
And then my phone vibrated again.
This time, there was a photograph attached.
A photograph of Leo walking home from school two days earlier.
Taken from across the street.
Underneath it were six words:
He has your daughter’s eyes.
I felt every ounce of warmth leave my body.
Someone had been watching my grandson.
And they had been watching him for much longer than I realized.
PART 4
I did not sleep that night.
Neither did Evelyn.
We sat in my living room with every light turned off, watching the street through a narrow gap in the curtains.
At three seventeen in the morning, the black SUV finally moved.
It drove slowly past my house.
Then it stopped at the corner.
For nearly a full minute, nothing happened.
Finally, it disappeared into the darkness.
Only then did I breathe.
Evelyn looked at me.
“They know.”
“I know.”
“They know Leo is alive.”
“I know.”
“And if they know that, Daniel may be in danger too.”
I looked at the old envelope on the coffee table.
Sarah had spent ten years protecting a secret.
Now that secret was protecting no one.
It was putting all of us in danger.
I stood.
“I’m going to find Daniel.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“You don’t even know where he is.”
“You do.”
She looked away.
I stared at her.
“You said you didn’t know where he was.”
“I said I didn’t know where he was now.”
“That means you knew where he was before.”
She closed her eyes.
“Lisbon.”
I frowned.
“Portugal?”
She nodded.
“He worked there for several years.”
“What did he do?”
“He became a doctor.”
I stared at her.
“Daniel became a doctor?”
“He always wanted to. His father wanted him to become a businessman. Daniel refused.”
“And Sarah knew?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t she tell me?”
“Because by the time she gave birth, Daniel had disappeared.”
“Disappeared?”
“He left America after his father threatened to have Sarah arrested.”
My stomach tightened.
“On what grounds?”
“Fraud.”
I stared at her.
“Sarah had never committed fraud.”
“I know.”
“So why?”
