Mark stepped toward me.
“Claire, I can explain.”
“Oh, you’re going to.” I looked at Diane, then at Ellie, then back at my husband. “But you’re going to start with why our son thinks your cousin is your coworker.”

Nobody answered.
That silence told me the lie went beyond Ellie.
“Claire, I can explain.”
Now I needed to know how long Mark had been keeping it from me.
I looked at Mark. “How long?”
He rubbed both hands over his face. “A couple months.”
“Months!? How many times has Noah been here?”
He looked away.
“How long?”

“Mark. Answer me.”
“Maybe six.”
Diane quietly said, “Seven.”
The correction stung, but something else caught me: Diane wasn’t helping Mark hide anymore.
Noah was watching us now. I softened my voice.
“Hey, buddy, why don’t you go show Grandma something inside?”
The correction stung
He looked confused.
“Are you mad, Mommy?”
“I just need to talk to Daddy.”

Diane looked at me before taking his hand. “Come on, sweetheart.”
He hesitated, then followed her inside. The second the door shut, I turned on Mark.
“Are you mad, Mommy?”
“Tell me everything.”
He started with Ellie.
Diane had contacted her months earlier. Apparently, Diane knew Mark wouldn’t answer her calls, so she asked Ellie to reach out.
Ellie and Mark had grown up together. Their families had been close. Almost siblings, Ellie said.
“I thought maybe he’d at least listen to me,” she explained.

“Tell me everything.”
Mark agreed to meet Diane here. Alone.
“I didn’t tell you because I didn’t even know if it would go anywhere,” he said.
I stared at him. “Apparently, it did.”
He nodded. “She apologized.”
That surprised me enough to shut me up.
“She apologized.”

Mark continued.
“She admitted what she did was wrong. Not just taking Noah. Everything. The comments. The way she treated you.”
Ellie quietly said, “She really has changed.”
I looked at her. “That’s not your call.”
She flinched.
“She really has changed.”
“You’re right.”
Mark stepped in. “I didn’t forgive her instantly. I met her several times first.”
“So why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I knew what it would do to you.”

“No. You knew what I might say.”
He shook his head. “Claire, that’s not fair.”
“So why didn’t you tell me?”
I stared at him.
“Then explain how lying to me was fair.”
He didn’t answer. Eventually, Diane had asked to see Noah. Mark said no.
Then she asked again. And again.
Finally, he agreed to bring Noah once.
“Just once,” he said.
“Then explain how lying to me was fair.”

“And how did ‘just once’ turn into seven times?”
His jaw tightened. “Noah loved seeing her.”
I felt something twist inside me.
Of course he did. Diane had always been warm with Noah. The problem had never been whether she loved him.
The problem was that she loved him in a way that sometimes made her think everyone else should move aside.
“And how did ‘just once’ turn into seven times?”
Mark continued.
“Mom was different with him. She asked before giving him anything. She didn’t criticize. She didn’t push.”

“So you brought him again. And again.”
He nodded.
I looked toward the house. Then another thought hit me.
“The drawing.”
I felt something twist inside me.
Mark frowned.
“What?”
I looked at Ellie. “Noah drew you kissing Mark. So, how literally are you taking the term ‘kissing cousins’ while sneaking my son off to the Grandma he’s not supposed to be seeing?”
Her mouth fell open.
For one horrible moment, everyone went silent again.

“How literally are you taking the term ‘kissing cousins?’”
Then Ellie’s face changed.
“Oh my God.” She turned toward Mark. “Was that after your fourth talk with Diane?”
He looked embarrassed. “Probably.”
Ellie covered her mouth. “I kissed him on the cheek.”
I stared at her.
She rushed to explain.
He looked embarrassed.

“Diane and Mark had this huge emotional conversation. Mark was crying. I hugged him and kissed his cheek. That’s it.”
I believed her. Her confusion was too genuine.
Mark wasn’t cheating.
Relief hit me—then vanished. If Ellie wasn’t the secret, why had Mark taught Noah a lie about who she was?
Mark wasn’t cheating.
I looked at him.
“Why does Noah think she’s your coworker?”
Mark’s relief disappeared.
“I needed something that wouldn’t lead back to Mom. If I called Ellie my cousin, Noah might start asking family questions. Or mention her to you.”

“Something false.”
Mark’s relief disappeared.
“Claire—”
“No. I’ve had enough. It’s time to end this.”
I walked to the door and opened it. Noah was sitting on the living room floor with plastic dinosaurs.
Diane looked up.
I crouched beside him. “Sweetheart, did you know Miss Ellie is Daddy’s cousin?”
“No. I’ve had enough. It’s time to end this.”

Noah shook his head.
“No. She’s Daddy’s friend from work.”
The entire room changed.
Diane stared at Mark.
Ellie looked furious.
I looked at him and felt colder than I had when I thought he was having an affair.
“No. She’s Daddy’s friend from work.”
Mark held up his hands.
“I was going to tell her.”
“You told me you were taking things slowly,” Ellie said. “You said you wanted to see whether Diane had really changed before talking to Claire.”
