They Kicked My Daughter and Me Out of Christmas Dinner—Five Minutes Later, They Were Begging Me to Stay

People don’t accidentally reveal secrets they’ve carried for years. They reveal them when they’re scared.

And my sister had never looked more frightened.

The next morning, I dropped Lily off at preschool. She wrapped her little arms around my neck before running inside.

“Will you pick me up early today?”

“I promise.”

She smiled and disappeared through the colorful classroom door.

I stood there for another few seconds, watching her laugh with the other children. It reminded me exactly why I couldn’t afford to lose myself in revenge.

This had never been about destroying my family.

It was about making sure my daughter never believed she deserved less love because someone else decided she was inconvenient.

At nine o’clock, I walked into Carter Holdings for the first time in almost six years.

The headquarters tower dominated downtown like a sheet of polished glass.

When I used to visit my grandfather as a teenager, employees smiled at me. They knew me as the granddaughter who brought him homemade lemonade during summer internships.

Today, conversations stopped as I entered the lobby.

The receptionist stood immediately.

“Miss Carter… the board is already upstairs.”

I nodded politely.

The elevator ride to the thirty-second floor felt longer than it actually was.

When the doors opened, Arthur Bennett was waiting.

He looked relieved.

“You came.”

“I almost didn’t.”

He smiled sadly.

“Your grandfather knew you would.”

Inside the boardroom, twelve people were already seated.

My father sat at the head of the table.

Vanessa occupied the chair beside him despite not being a board member.

My mother sat quietly against the wall as an observer.

Nobody said Merry Christmas.

The chairman, Robert Ellison, gestured toward the empty seat opposite my father.

“Miss Carter, thank you for attending.”

I sat down.

The chair felt strangely familiar.

It had once belonged to my grandfather.
