I Spent Thousands on My Mistress While My Wife Quietly Took Our Baby and Left—Then I Opened the Envelope She Left Behind

I closed my eyes.

“I don’t think you understand.”

“What?”

“My daughter is gone.”

“You’ll see her again.”

“She doesn’t even want me to contact her directly.”

“Because she’s angry.”

“No.”

I swallowed.

“Because she doesn’t trust me.”

Corinne didn’t respond.

For the first time since the affair began, I heard the uncomfortable truth in my own voice.

I had spent months making myself believe Elise was the problem.

Now she was gone.

And suddenly I could see that the problem had followed me everywhere.

It was me.

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

I opened it.

This is Attorney Rebecca Hale, representing Elise Morgan. Please contact my office Monday morning regarding temporary custody and financial arrangements. Do not attempt to enter the residence where Elise and Mabel are currently staying. Do not remove or transfer any marital property. Any communication regarding Mabel should be directed through this office until further notice.

I read it twice.

Then I looked at the clock.

8:43 p.m.

Mabel was probably asleep.

Or maybe she was crying.

Maybe Elise was exhausted.

Maybe she was sitting in some unfamiliar room, holding our daughter and wondering whether she had finally done the right thing.

I wanted to call.

I wanted to beg.

I wanted to tell Elise I was sorry.

But the attorney’s message was clear.

So I did something I hadn’t done in months.

I put my phone down.

I sat alone in the house.

And I listened.

For the first time since Mabel had been born, I could hear how quiet our home really was.

The next morning, I woke up on the couch.

I don’t remember falling asleep.

Sunlight was coming through the windows.

For half a second, I forgot everything.

Then I heard no baby crying.

No bottles being washed.

No soft footsteps upstairs.

No Elise moving around the kitchen.

I sat up.
