I Spent Thousands on My Mistress While My Wife Quietly Took Our Baby and Left—Then I Opened the Envelope She Left Behind

Underneath it was one last sentence.

And Daniel, please don’t mistake losing access to me for losing access to your daughter. Those are not the same thing.

I sat motionless.

For several minutes, I couldn’t hear anything except the refrigerator humming.

Then my phone rang.

Corinne.

Her name appeared on the screen.

For a few seconds, I simply stared at it.

Normally, seeing her name made me smile.

That night, I felt nothing.

She called again.

I answered.

“Hey,” she said brightly. “Did you get home okay?”

I looked at the shopping bags sitting on the floor.

The diamond bracelet was still inside one of them.

“Elise left.”

There was silence.

“What?”

“She took Mabel.”

Another pause.

Then Corinne said something that made my stomach turn.

“Well… I guess you knew this was coming.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“I mean, Daniel, you told me she was unhappy.”

“She was.”

“You told me the marriage was basically over.”

I stood up.

“I never said it was over.”

“You said you were going to leave.”

“I said I was thinking about it.”

“You said you loved me.”

“I did.”

Her voice became defensive.

“And I love you too.”

I looked around the empty kitchen.

The photographs were gone.

The baby bottles were gone.

Elise’s coffee mug was gone.

Even the little blanket she kept on the couch was gone.

Everything that made the house feel like a home had disappeared.

Except the consequences.

“Corinne,” I said quietly, “I don’t know what happens now.”

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she asked, “Did she find out about me?”

“Yes.”

“Oh.”

Just one word.

No apology.

No concern for Elise.

No concern for Mabel.

Only fear.

I realized something then.

For months, I had mistaken being wanted for being loved.

“Are you still there?” Corinne asked.

“I’m here.”

“What are you going to do?”

I looked at the divorce papers.

“I don’t know.”

She sighed.

“Daniel, you can’t just abandon me now.”
