My fiancé left me with his 10 children and disappeared a week before our wedding — 30 years later, his lawyer showed up at my door and said, “I have an envelope for you. It was his last wish.”

It was chaotic.

And I loved every second of it.

Then one Sunday afternoon, someone knocked on the front door.

I opened it and found an older gentleman standing on the porch.

I had never seen him before.

“Evelyn?”

“Yes?”

He held out a sealed envelope.

“My name is Arthur Vance. I was Julian’s attorney.”

My entire body froze.

I hadn’t heard Julian’s name spoken by a stranger in decades.

Arthur continued quietly.

“Julian passed away recently. He instructed me to deliver this to you after his death.”

Before I could ask where Julian had been or why he had disappeared, Arthur placed the envelope in my hand.

Then he left.

I stood in the doorway staring at it.

Behind me, the room had fallen silent.

All ten of my children were watching.

Eventually, I returned to the dining table and sat down.
