After 6 Painful Years of Infertility, My MIL Ruined Our Gender Reveal – How I Handled It Left the Entire Room in Tears

And through all of it, there had been Evelyn.

Owen’s mother never openly blamed me for our infertility when her son was around.

She was smarter than that.

Instead, she disguised her insults as concern.

At Thanksgiving, she covered my hand with hers and sighed.

“Some women are simply more naturally suited to motherhood than others.”

At a birthday dinner, she looked across the table and said, “Owen always wanted children. It must be very hard for him.”

“It is hard for both of us,” I replied.

“Of course, Katie. That is what I meant.”

Once, after Owen stepped outside to answer a phone call, Evelyn leaned closer.

“Have you considered that holding on to him might be selfish?”

I stared at her.

“I only want my son to have a full life,” she added.

When I told Owen what she’d said, he confronted her.

Evelyn cried, insisted I’d misunderstood her, and afterward became more careful about when she made her comments.

Her cruelest one came during a family baby shower.

I was in the kitchen getting water when she followed me.

“You know,” she said, “there are women who accept when something is broken.”

“What exactly are you talking about?”

Her eyes dropped toward my stomach.

Then she smiled.

By the time Owen walked into the kitchen, she was casually asking whether I wanted coffee.
