She Died Giving Birth at 18—10 Years Later, a Stranger Revealed the Truth About My Grandson’s Father

For ten years, I had believed my daughter’s death was a tragic complication of childbirth.

The doctors had told me there had been nothing anyone could have done.

But my daughter had just asked me to investigate the night she died.

Why?

What had she known?

What had Daniel known?

And who were the people she had been afraid of?

I barely slept.

At seven the next morning, there was a knock on my door.

I expected Evelyn.

Instead, when I opened it, a man was standing on my porch.

He looked about twenty-eight.

Tall.

Pale.

His hands were shaking.

He looked at me for several seconds without speaking.

Then his eyes moved past me.

Toward the hallway.

Toward the bedroom where my grandson was still sleeping.

The man’s eyes filled with tears.

“I think,” he whispered, “I’m his father.”

My heart stopped.

Daniel had finally come.

And he wasn’t alone.

A black SUV was parked across the street.

Inside it sat an older man watching my house.

The moment I saw him, I remembered the words in my daughter’s letter.

Don’t let them take my son.

PART 4

The man on my porch looked at me as though he had spent ten years practicing what he would say when this moment finally came.

But now that he was standing in front of me, he couldn’t seem to find the words.

I stared at him.

“You’re Daniel?”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

My hand tightened around the edge of the door.

For ten years, I had imagined meeting the father of my grandson.

In some versions of that fantasy, I screamed at him.

In others, I demanded to know why he had abandoned my daughter.

Sometimes I imagined him apologizing.

Sometimes I imagined myself slamming the door in his face.

But I had never imagined this.

A young man standing on my porch with tears in his eyes.

He looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Terrified.

“How did you find me?” I asked.

“Evelyn.”

Of course.

I looked toward the black SUV across the street.

Daniel followed my eyes.

His expression changed immediately.

“Is he here?”

“Who?”

“My father.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“So you know about him.”

Daniel nodded.

“He followed me.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked back at me.

“Because he doesn’t want me here.”

Before I could respond, I heard footsteps behind me.

My grandson appeared in the hallway, rubbing his eyes.

“Grandma?”

Daniel froze.
