My Mother Invited Me Home for Christmas After 5 Years—But She Never Expected My Father’s Final Secret to Be Revealed

PART 3

I looked down at her hand.

She immediately released me.

For a moment, I saw something I hadn’t seen in years.

Fear.

Not anger.

Not annoyance.

Fear.

I opened the door.

Corinne Walsh stood on the porch wearing a dark wool coat, holding a leather folder beneath one arm.

But she wasn’t alone.

Beside her stood a tall gray-haired man I had never seen before.

Vivian’s expression changed instantly.

The color drained from her face.

Brielle came down the final steps.

“Who is that?”

The man looked directly at Vivian.

“My name is Harold Bennett.”

Vivian took one step backward.

“No.”

Harold’s voice was calm.

“You remember me.”

Vivian shook her head.

“I don’t know you.”

Harold gave a small, humorless smile.

“You do.”

He reached into his coat and removed a photograph.

He held it up.

Even from several feet away, I could see the image clearly.

It was my father.

Standing beside Harold.

Both men were younger.

Maybe twenty years younger.

Behind them was the same house I was standing in.

My stomach tightened.

My father had always been private about his business.

After his death, Vivian told everyone he had left almost nothing.

She said his medical bills had consumed most of his savings.

She said the house was the only thing of value.

And because I was supposedly too emotional and irresponsible to understand financial matters, she said she had handled everything for the family.

For five years, I had believed there was nothing left to fight over.

Until Corinne found something.

A document.

Then another.

Then another.

And eventually, a name.

Harold Bennett.

My father’s former business partner.

I looked at him.

“You knew my father?”

Harold nodded.

“For twenty-seven years.”

Brielle frowned.

“Why have I never heard of you?”

“Because your mother made sure you didn’t.”

Vivian snapped, “That’s enough.”

Harold didn’t even look at her.

He looked at me instead.

“Your father asked me to keep certain documents safe.”
