I Lied and Told My Dad I Failed With a 98.7 Score—Then I Exposed the Secret Plan to Steal My Mother’s House

I walked straight into the room.

“My name is Diane Elizabeth Reynolds.”

I pulled my ID from my wallet and placed it on the table.

The attorney frowned.

Carol recovered first.

“This is ridiculous,” she laughed nervously. “Diane, honey, you’re confused—”

“No.”

I looked directly at the girl.

“How much are they paying you?”

Her eyes widened.

Carol snapped.

“Don’t answer her!”

The girl started trembling.

“I… I wasn’t told it was stealing,” she whispered.

Carol slammed her hand on the table.

“Emily!”

So her name wasn’t even Diane.

Mr. Sanders entered behind us carrying a leather briefcase.

“Good evening,” he said calmly.

“I represent the legal owner of 418 Magnolia Avenue.”

He looked at the notary.

“I believe this proceeding should end immediately.”

The notary compared my driver’s license to the girl.

Then he looked at our faces.

One was nervous.

One was real.

He quietly closed the file.

“This notarization is terminated.”

Carol’s face turned white.

“You can’t do that!”

“I absolutely can,” the notary replied. “Attempted identity fraud is a criminal matter.”

Emily suddenly burst into tears.

“I’m sorry! They told me her father had permission!”

She pointed directly at Carol.

“They gave me five thousand dollars!”

Silence.
