I Lied and Told My Dad I Failed With a 98.7 Score—Then I Exposed the Secret Plan to Steal My Mother’s House

PART 3

I looked through the ballroom doors. My father was onstage laughing beside Carol, raising another champagne glass while guests clapped for his “perfect family.”

He had somehow been in two places at once.

Then I understood.

“He isn’t at the notary,” I said.

“No,” Mr. Sanders replied. “His attorney is. Carol left the party fifteen minutes ago. Arthur stayed behind to create an alibi.”

Of course.

It was cleaner that way.

If anyone questioned him later, dozens of wealthy guests could swear he had never left the celebration.

I glanced toward the entrance.

Carol’s chair beside the head table was empty.

She had disappeared.

“Aunt Susan,” I said, turning.

She was already reading my face.

“We’re leaving,” she answered before I finished.

We ran.

Not gracefully.

Not politely.

I kicked off my heels halfway through the hotel lobby and sprinted barefoot across the marble floor with Aunt Susan chasing behind me.

Outside, Los Angeles was glowing beneath the evening lights.

Susan unlocked her old Honda.

“Seatbelt!”

I slammed the door.

The engine roared.

As she pulled into traffic, I called Mr. Sanders again.

“Which office?”

“Wilshire Boulevard. Sterling Notary Services. Fifth floor.”

“How much time?”

“They scheduled the signing for eight thirty. It’s eight eighteen.”
