My only son donated one of his kidneys to a five-year-old girl. After he d!ed from a rare complication, the girl’s mother showed up at my door and whispered, “He never told you the real reason he saved her… did he?”

Her name was Nora.

She was the daughter of Chloe, one of Julian’s former classmates.

Her kidneys were failing, and after months of testing, none of her relatives had been a suitable match.

But Julian was.

“She’s five, Mom,” he said quietly. “She should be learning how to ride a bicycle, not spending her childhood staring at hospital ceilings.”

I looked at the photograph again.

Then at my son.

Every instinct inside me wanted to tell him no.

I wanted to remind him how terrified he had always been of hospitals.

I wanted to ask why he had to be the one taking the risk.
