My 7-Year-Old Called the Authorities Because I Wouldn’t Let Him Have Ice Cream Before Dinner – When the Officer Arrived, What He Did Next Stunned Me

Tyler frowned.

“Police fix unfair things.”

Officer Bruce glanced at me.

I gave a helpless shrug.

“I told him the police help people.”

“Mom said if something bad happens, you call them,” Tyler added.

“That’s true,” Officer Bruce said. “But being disappointed isn’t the same as being unsafe.”

Tyler considered that.

“If your mom says you have to wait until after dinner for ice cream,” Bruce continued, “that might feel unfair.”

“Very unfair.”

“But it is not an emergency.”

Tyler still looked unconvinced.

Then Officer Bruce asked,

“Why was waiting such a big problem today?”

Tyler hesitated.

“Because she waits too much.”

I blinked.

“What?”

Officer Bruce looked at him.

“Your mom waits too long for ice cream?”

Tyler shook his head.

“For everything.”

My embarrassment disappeared.

Now I was confused.

“Tyler, what are you talking about?”

He shoved his hands into his pockets.

“Nothing.”

“No. You called the police because apparently I ‘wait too much.’ You are finishing that sentence.”

Tyler looked toward the kitchen.

Officer Bruce followed his gaze.

From the doorway, part of our refrigerator was visible.

“What’s that on the freezer?”

I turned.

Our weekly calendar was held up by two magnets—one shaped like a taco and another made from a broken plastic dinosaur Tyler had refused to let me throw away.

Most of the squares contained normal things.

Soccer practice.

Laundry.

Trash day.

School library.
